Dual Credit, Honors, & Bishop Carmody Award

Dual Credit

Juniors and Seniors may take dual credit courses.
 
Students that begin dual credit courses as Seniors must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher after Junior year. Students must have (3) teacher recommendations. One must include the previous teacher from the subject area course the student plans to take. Any course not already listed in the academic course guide must be approved by the Principal, including those taken during summer school.

  • St. JPIIHS
    • Dual credit courses offered by our instructors cannot be taken off campus or online.
    • In order to take an online dual credit course, the student must have a study hall in their schedule.  Exceptions only with approval by principal
    • St. John Paul II High School campus coursework scheduling of classes takes a priority over any off-campus coursework scheduling. Students will not be excused from missing any on campus class time because of off campus schedules. Off Campus dual credit classes must be approved by the Principal on a case by case basis.
  • Del Mar College
    • All students must complete the Application for Admission to Del Mar College online through the Apply Texas Application (click on "Create a new 2 year application")
    • Contact your high school counselor for eligibility
    • Provide documentation of a meningitis vaccination if you are 21 years of age or younger and have not been enrolled for a least one fall or spring semester at Del Mar College
    • Complete the Dual Credit registration forms
    • Provide an official high school transcript and college transcript if you participated in dual credit with another institution
    • Meet TSI assessment requirements for eligible courses
  • General Dual Credit Guidelines
    • Parents are responsible for fees related to dual credit classes which include TSI testing, tuition, and books
    • Dual Credit grades are included in the St. JPII HS ranking and the No Pass/No Play Policy applies
    • Dual Credit grades are posted as semester grades
    • All St. JPII HS Tuition must be current in order to participate in dual credit coursework

 

Theology Dual Credit (via University of Mary)

Grade 12   0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to University of Mary Dual Credit program

This course of intensive faith formation will feature an open discussion about Catholic life and living, examined in light of the responsibilities of Christian discipleship. This opportunity will be guided in the reading, reflection, and discussion of several great theological works that engage a wide range of topics and incite ongoing conversion. The course will be based upon the classical seminar model of education.  As such, it aims gradually to initiate students who are familiar with a lecture-based educational style into a discussion-based style of learning.  The underlying conviction is that careful yet vigorous dialectic among students, with the instructor’s guidance, is invaluable in bringing forth a particular depth of insight and understanding. United States History I Dual Credit (HIST 1301 via Del Mar College)

Grade 11    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Survey of the nation’s colonial background, the struggle for independence and the emergence of political parties; emphasis on individualism, westward expansion, social reform and sectionalism. (Online format. Three college credit hours)

 

United States History II Dual Credit (HIST 1302 via Del Mar College)

Grade 11    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Survey of Reconstruction; the impact of industrialization, urbanization, and immigration; the rise of America as a world power; the quest for economic security and for social justice. 

(Online format. Three college credit hours)

 

United States Government Dual Credit (GOVT 2305 via Del Mar College)

Grade 12    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Origin and development of the U.S. Constitution, structure and powers of the national government including the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, federalism, political participation, the national election process, public policy, civil liberties and civil rights. 

(Online format. Three college credit hours)

 

Biology Dual Credit (BIOL 1408 : Fundamentals of Cell Biology via Del Mar College)

Grade 11 / 12    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Scientific method, chemical properties of life, cells and organelles, metabolism, photosynthesis, respiration, cell division, genetics, molecular genetics and genetic engineering. Designed primarily to be the first biology course for non-science majors.

Biology Dual Credit (BIOL 1409 : Diversity and Environment via Del Mar College)

Grade 11 / 12    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Diversity, structure and life cycles of monerans, protists, fungi, plants, animals (including humans); population genetics, evolution, principles of ecology and global ecology. Intended primarily for non-science majors. (St. John Paul II HS Campus. Four college credit hours)

 

College Algebra Dual Credit (MATH 1314 via Del Mar College)

Grade 12    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Polynomials, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic functions, equations w/ functions, matrices; possibly sequences, series, probability and conics 

(Online format. Three college credit hours)

 

Trigonometry Dual Credit (MATH 1316 via Del Mar College)

Grade 12    0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Admission to Del Mar College based upon TSI scores 

Trigonometric functions, identities, height and distance, equations involving trigonometric functions, solutions of triangles, area, vectors and their basic applications, and inverse functions (Online format. Three college credit hours)

Honors

Honors courses are offered for highly motivated students who wish to be challenged in the classroom.  These courses offer more challenging content in instruction and more rigorous assessments with an emphasis on demonstrating deep thinking, analysis, and effective communication of original ideas through writing, speaking, and creative projects.  Honors courses are offered in all five core subject areas.

Bishop Carmody Award

The Bishop Carmody Distinguished Achievement Award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a graduate by St. John Paul II High School.  Named in honor of the school's founder, Bishop Edmond Carmody, this award recognizes the student who has exceled academically and behaviorally during their time at St. John Paul II High School.  Candidates must meet the following requirements in order to qualify:
  1. Have a cumulative unweighted average GPA of 3.5 or higher
  2. Have completed upon graduation twelve (12) honors or dual credit courses.
  3. Have completed upon graduation four (4) credits in Theology
  4. An exemplary conduct record at St. John Paul II High School
  5. Achieving an average grade of "A" on the student's entire Senior Thesis Project by the due date
  6. Completion of at least one (1) of the following measures:
    1. Recognition as a Commended Scholar, Semifinalist or Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; or
    2. Achieving a grade of an "A" in dual credit course
  7. Three (3) credits in language other than English, two (2) credits in P.E./Athletics, & one (1) credit in academic electives
