About JPIIHS

John Paul II High School is located in Corpus Christi on the Texas Gulf Coast, and within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi.  Our high school began its inaugural year on August 1, 2006, with a class of freshmen. Each year a new grade level was added until we had a four year high school, grades nine through twelve. The creation of John Paul II High School was the vision and inspiration of Bishop Edmond Carmody. As a Catholic school, we provide a unique environment in which students can experience the presence of the Holy Spirit. Its focus is on the individual person's spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, cultural and physical development.

Philosophy

John Paul II High School is committed to the development and formation of all aspects of the student's life. Based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, John Paul II High School exists to radiate Jesus Christ in al things by encouraging those who learn, worship, and work within this community to serve others and to strive toward the highest ideals of Christian spiritual, moral and intellectual perfection.

The moral and spiritual life of John Paul II High School is based on Pope John II's Apostolic Exhortation: The Church in America, and strives to:

• Enable our students to encounter Jesus Christ through personal and liturgical prayer;

• Foster within our students a desire for holiness and a life of continuous conversion to Jesus Christ despite imperfections;

• Provide opportunities for our students to fully share in the Church as a sign of the communion to each other and Jesus Christi; and

• Promote opportunities for our students to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in the community through acts of charity and works of mercy.

Recognizing the varied backgrounds and abilities of our students, John Paul II High School provides a college preparatory education requiring diligence, rigor and consistent effort in order to develop each student's personal potential for scholastic achievement. In their course work, students engage in the pursuit of excellence and learn to become critical thinkers. Students are challenged to become witnesses to the Christian virtues so as to become true disciples of the Lord Jesus not only in their family life but also in the community.

In addition to moral, spiritual and academic growth, John Paul II High School seeks to cultivate physical, social and emotional growth. These areas are addressed through the school's academic curriculum, retreats, student services, extracurricular activities, and competitive sports.

The design of the shield of John Paul II High School, seen in the banner above, is comprised of four charges (fields) which is similar to that of the coat of arms of Bishop Edmond Carmody, founder of John Paul II High School in 2005.

In the upper dexter charge is a green field which stands for Bishop Carmody’s birthplace, Ireland, but also the color of hope.  On this charge is blazoned the two crossed keys found on the flag of the Vatican City State symbolizing the keys of St. Peter and representing the schools fidelity to the Roman Catholic Church and its love for the Pope. The gold cross is taken from Pope John Paul II’s shield and Bishop Carmody’s shield.

In the lower dexter charge is a red field symbolizing the Eucharist, the Blood of Christ, blazoned on this field are three ciboria also a symbol of the Eucharist, the Body of Christ taken from the coat of arms of the Diocese of Corpus Christi.  The three ciboria also serve as a symbol of the Blessed Trinity.

In the upper sinister charge is a blue field blazoned by a silver star which is also taken from Bishop Carmody’s coat of arms and denotes the State of Texas, the site of the Bishop’s priestly and episcopal ministry.  

In the lower sinister charge is a blue field blazoned by a large “M” for Maria, which is taken from the coat of arms of Pope John Paul II, which was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.   It denotes the schools dedication to the Mother of God and its chapel under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception.

On a scroll, the motto Fides, Ratio, Virtus, appears at the base of the shield which expresses the keys of a Catholic Education.   Fides or faith which holds priority, the school seeks to teach the faith of the Church handed on to us by the apostles.   Ratio or reason which represents the use of our God given ability to think, to learn, to reason, the school seeks to impart a valuable and quality education.  Virtus or virtue, the challenge made to the students to become witnesses to the Christian virtues so as to become true disciples of the Lord Jesus not only in their family life but also in the pursuit of a career and become responsible citizens.

Mascot

John Paul II High School has taken as its mascot the Centurion. who was a roman officer commanding a century or a company, the strength of which varied between fifty to one hundred men.   The centurion was the most important and most respected officer in the Roman Army.   He was a leader who rose from the common ranks to high authority, selected for his excellence and example. This type of character and virtue in this man is what John Paul II High School seeks to teach and instill in its students both in the academic and athletic endeavors. 

In the Bible, the two centurions are mentioned in the Gospels.   The first centurion is mentioned in Mt. 8:5, Lk 7:2.   He approaches the Lord Jesus and asks him to heal his servant.   His faith is commended by the Lord.   Though he is a gentile (a non-Jew) he nonetheless symbolizes, in the Gospel, those who will come to believe in the Lord who do not yet even believe in the God of Israel.

The second centurion is mentioned at the foot of the cross in both the Gospels of Matthew and Mark (Mt. 28:54; Mk. 15:39) when he looks up at Jesus on the cross who has already died he exclaims, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”  

The bible also mentions two centurions by name, Cornelius (Acts 10:1) and Julius (Acts 26:1).   Cornelius is the first gentile admitted into the Church and Julius brought St. Paul to Rome.     

In the end, the figure of the centurion in the Bible represents faith, strength, dignity, honor, virtue and humility.   For this reason, John Paul II High School finds the Centurion a worthy symbol and model for holiness and excellence.
